History of Ceylon Coffee
Coffee was first introduced to Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon) during the colonial period by the Dutch in the 17th century. However, it was during the British colonial era in the 19th century that coffee cultivation expanded significantly in Sri Lanka.
Ceylon Coffee gained a reputation for its exceptional taste and aroma. It was considered among the finest coffee varieties globally, and the beans were in high demand in European markets.
However, the devastating coffee leaf disease, known as “coffee rust,” struck the plantations in the late 19th century, leading to a significant decline in coffee production. This crisis eventually led to the transition from coffee cultivation to tea, which thrived in the cooler and higher-altitude regions of Sri Lanka.
Revival of Ceylon Coffee
In recent years, Sri Lankan specialty coffee has experienced a remarkable revival, capturing the attention of coffee enthusiasts worldwide.
